About 2.98 billion trips are expected to be made during the 2018 Spring Festival travel rush, known as the Chunyun, between February 1 and March 12, Lian Weiliang, deputy director with the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) told a press conference.


The figure is basically the same as that of last year, he said.


The number of road trips is projected to reach 2.48 billion, a 1.6-percent decrease from last year, while train trips are likely to top 389 million, up 8.8 percent year on year, the NDRC said in an earlier statement.


Air travel will likely top 65 million trips, surging 10 percent from last year, while boat trips are predicted to reach 46 million during the period.


Transportation authorities are prepared for the travel rush, when hundreds of millions of Chinese return to their hometowns or travel around the country, putting huge pressure on the transportation system, according to Lian.


The Spring Festival, or Chinese Lunar New Year, falls on Feb. 16 this year.

KHARTOUM, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations on Wednesday said the number of South Sudanese refugees living in Sudan has now reached 800,000.


Noriko Yoshida, representative of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) in Sudan, told a forum on the refugees issue that other sources estimated that this number is even higher.


This makes Sudan the country hosting the second largest number of South Sudanese refugees in the region, he said.


Sudan's Vice President Hassabo Mohamed Abdul-Rahman, speaking at the forum, reiterated Sudan's commitment to hosting the refugees and providing them with necessary needs.


He further urged the UN and donor countries to change some practices in allocating funds for the refugees and the hosting communities.


"We want most of the funds to go to the refugees and the host communities, and not to the organizations' administrative operations," he said, adding that is necessary to ensure that any money paid by donors actually goes to the refugees.


Sudan is hosting around 2 million refugees from Ethiopia, Eritrea, Chad, Somalia, Central Africa Republic, South Sudan, Yemen and Syria.


On Aug. 15, 2016, Sudan decided to consider the South Sudanese fleeing the war in their home country as refugees, opening the door for the UN to provide aid to them in Sudan.


A large number of South Sudanese refugees have fled their homes to Sudan since the eruption of a civil war in mid-December 2013.

BEIJING, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan welcomed their U.S. counterparts with an informal afternoon tea at the Palace Museum Wednesday afternoon.


U.S. President Donald Trump and his wife Melania Trump arrived in Beijing earlier on Wednesday.


They had the afternoon tea in the Baoyun Building, also known as the Hall of Embodied Treasures, in the southwestern corner of the Forbidden City.


Built in 1915, the Baoyun Building is a Western-style building in the former imperial compound. It was used to store antiques, but now serves as an exhibition hall for the museum's history.
