BEIJING, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- China's Minister of Justice Zhang Jun has underscored the importance of the Communist Party of China (CPC) leadership of lawyers, calling it the "soul of the country's legal system."
Zhang's remarks were made at a recent forum for lawyers and published in Friday's edition of the People's Daily, the flagship newspaper of the CPC.
Strengthening Party leadership of the work of lawyers is by no means just a slogan, nor a matter of expediency, Zhang said, adding that it fully accords with the national conditions and is an arrangement of the political system concerning the long-term development of the role of lawyers.
Zhang said the 19th CPC National Congress set the direction for reform and development of the role of lawyers. The report adopted at the congress stated that "the Party exercises overall leadership over all areas of endeavor in every part of the country."
The minister asked lawyers to closely study the report and thoroughly understand it.
Zhang said that Party leadership is the most fundamental nature of socialism with Chinese characteristics and the basic guarantee for socialist rule of law.
In this regard, strengthening Party building among lawyers is "the core part and fundamental measure" in deepening reform of the legal system, the minister said.
If this issue cannot be resolved, it will be inevitable that lawyers are influenced by Western legal systems, he said.
"We must adhere to Party leadership so as to develop the role of lawyers and strengthen self discipline among lawyers," Zhang said.
In August 2017, China had more than 330,000 lawyers and over 26,000 law firms.
AMMAN, April 19 (Xinhua) -- French President Francois Hollande said Tuesday that the delayed Syrian talks in Geneva between the Syrian government and the opposition are worrisome, reported the state-run Petra news agency.
Following a meeting with King Abdullah II of Jordan in Amman, Hollande said the postponed talks may mean the Syrian truce might end soon, thus repeated killing and destruction all over again.
"We must find political solutions which is why I am here today," said Hollande, visiting Jordan during a regional tour that has already taken him to Egypt and Lebanon.
"What is taking place in Geneva is critical," he stressed, adding that if the truce ends, it may lead to an increase in Syrian refugees into Jordan.
King Abdullah said Jordan and France will uphold their cooperation in various fields.
Talks between the two sides covered regional developments and efforts to combat terrorism.
Jordan will continue supporting France in its fight against terrorism, said the King.
During the talks, Hollande expressed his appreciation of Jordan's support towards the French forces fighting the Islamic State (IS) militant group, as French fighter jets launch raids from Jordan against the IS.
MEXICO CITY, April 14 (Xinhua) -- Artworks created in China by eight Mexican artists will go on display Saturday in Mexico's southern state of Oaxaca, Mexican National Institute of Fine Arts announced Thursday.
Titled "Nao Now, Mexico-Beijing 2014," in which "Nao" refers to the Spanish sailing vessel Manila Galleon that explored the ancient trade routes between Mexico and the Far East from the 16th to 19th century, the exhibition features artworks with various subjects ranging from landscapes to comic heroes.
"Nao Now in Chinese sounds like 'brain-brain' and refers to the intellectual and cultural exchanges between the two countries," the project's website explains, adding that the endeavor "seeks to reinterpret the meaning of the trade route, transforming it into a route of cultural exchanges that can open new links between China and Mexico."
Curator Pablo J. Rico said on the website that the project was born to "restore and reinvent the cultural and artistic connections between two great contemporary historical realities in the Pacific region -- Mexico and China."
In 2014, eight Mexican artists became resident artists in Beijing, where they learned Chinese-developed graphic art techniques from their local counterparts.
The exhibit made its debut in the Mexico City National Print Museum at the end of last year, and will run through June 10 in Oaxaca.
