A newcomer helps the Habs, analytics stars Patrice Bergeron and Mark Giordano do what they do, and San Josea€?s third line comes up big. Christine Michael Sr Jersey . That and much more in Scott Cullena€?s notes from opening night of the NHL season. PARENTEAU ADVISORY The Canadiensa€? line of LW Max Pacioretty, C David Desharnais and RW P.A. Parenteau was dominant, with Parenteau leading the game with a 67.9% Corsi (19 CF, 9 CA) to go with his pair of assists. The addition of Parenteau, in exchange for Daniel Briere, could be a real shot in the arm to the Habsa€? attack. Desharnais Line Crushes Bozak Trio Montreal Corsi% Toronto Corsi% RW P.A. Parenteau 68% RW Phil Kessel 41% LW Max Pacioretty 67% LW James van Riemsdyk 41% C David Desharnais 63% C Tyler Bozak 39% Maple Leafs D Stuart Percy had a strong showing in his NHL debut. He played 20:21 alongside Roman Polak and recorded an assist and all seemed to be going well until Montreala€?s winning goal deflected in off his skate. RW David Clarkson (60.0%, 12 CF, 8 CA) was one the Leafsa€? Corsi leaders for the first game, behind only Peter Holland. Clarkson, Mike Santorelli as well as defencemen Morgan Rielly and Jake Gardiner, all started at least 75% of their even-strength shifts in the offensive zone. More: Canadiens C Tomas Plekanec scored a pair of goals and D Alexei Emelin recorded two assists. It was Emelina€?s third multi-assist game in his 165-game NHL careera€|Maple Leafs D Roman Polak recorded a game-high seven hitsa€|Canadiens D Andrei Markov played a game-high 26:17. SHUTDOWN LINE The Flyersa€? number one line of LW Brayden Schenn, C Claude Giroux and RW Jakub Voracek got buried, mostly by the Bruinsa€? line of LW Brad Marchand, C Patrice Bergeron and RW Reilly Smith. Therea€?s no shame in that, as Bergeron is one of the gamea€?s premier puck possession forwards, but ita€?s tough for the Flyers to generate offence when their top line is locked down like that. Schenn was on for a game-worst 16.0% (4 for, 21 against) of the even-strength shot attempts. Bergeron also won 15-of-19 (78.9%) faceoffs, with Giroux winning three of 17 (17.6%). Bostona€?s leader in ice time was D Adam McQuaid, who logged 21:47, the second-highest of his 221-game career (and most since February 26, 2011), spending time with both Zdeno Chara and Dennis Seidenberg at various points. McQuaid also assisted on Chris Kellya€?s game-winning goal with 1:51 remaining in the third period when Steve Mason couldna€?t handle McQuaida€?s knuckling one-timer. 32-year-old Bobby Robins made his NHL debut for the Bruins, registering five hits and scrapping with Flyers D Luke Schenn, earning seven penalty minutes in 6:58 of actual ice time. More: Bruins C Carl Soderberg had a pair of assistsa€|Flyers C Sean Couturier scored Philadelphiaa€?s lone goal, started 21.4% of his shifts in the offensive zone and generated positive possession stats. ON THE MARK Flames D Mark Giordano turned into an analytics superstar last season, most notably because his relative possession numbers were the best in the league. In that respect, Giordano got off to a good start against Vancouver, on the ice for 78.3% (18 for, 5 against) of even-strength shot attempts, while the Flames managed 35.7% (20 for, 36 against) of the shot share with Giordano off the ice. All the more impressive, it came largely at the expense of the Sedins and Radim Vrbata. One of the big questions for the Canucks is how well new centres Nick Bonino and Linden Vey can hold up the second and third lines. Both had positive possession stats and Vey assisted on Zack Kassiana€?s goal. Canucks D Chris Tanev, who may be leaned on more now that Jason Garrison has departed, had a strong game, contributing two assists and positive possession numbers despite starting three quarters of his shifts in the defensive zone. More: Flames rookie LW Johnny Gaudreau started 30.0% of his shifts in the offensive zonea€|Flames LW Curtis Glencross led the forwards with 19:10 TOI, four shots on goal and five hits. WING AND A PRAYER The Sharksa€? offence was paced by RW Tommy Wingels, who had a pair of goals. Wingelsa€? line, with LW Tye McGinn and rookie C Chris Tierney had positive possession numbers to go with those couple goals, despite starting fewer than 30% of their shifts in the offensive zone. Sharks G Antti Niemi was much maligned after his performance against Los Angeles in last yeara€?s playoffs, and while a regular-season game is a far cry from providing redemption, a 34-save shutout was a good way to start the year. Kings D Brayden McNabb played 23:27, second only to partner Drew Doughty (27:28). McNabb was filling in for an injured Jake Muzzin. Notes: Sharks LW Patrick Marleau contributed a goal and an assista€|In his return to the San Jose defence, Brent Burns picked up a couple of assists and had a game-high five giveaways while leading the Sharks with 21:35 time on icea€|Kings line of LW Kyle Clifford, C Jarret Stoll and RW Trevor didna€?t start one shift with a defensive zone faceoff.
