Bottom line: "Just because you did certain things last year means nothing as far as this upcoming season," Manning said. "Ive always felt the NFL does not owe you anything." But even by an NFL rosters constantly shuffling standards, the Broncos did some major reorganizing around their franchise quarterback -- the 43-8 loss to Seattle in the Super Bowl exposing too many problems for the AFC champions to stand pat. The line will be different with the return of Ryan Clady at left tackle and the shifting of Orlando Franklin, who had a poor Super Bowl, from right tackle to left guard. John Elway, who put this roster together, said he hopes part of the new identity will take some of the focus off Manning, much the same way he became less of a focal point in his final years, which produced his two Super Bowl wins. "I think that weve got to get to be where were a complete football team," Elway said. "We cant rely on 18 to win it because he cant win it by himself." Yu Darvishs recent no-hit bid now officially ended in the seventh inning, not the ninth. Major League Baseball overturned a disputed scoring decision from Friday nights game between the Texas Rangers and Red Sox. Acting on an appeal by Boston slugger David Ortiz, MLB changed an error in the seventh to a single on a high fly that dropped untouched between fielders. Ortiz said Wednesday that he wouldnt have appealed the play if it had been a no-hitter. Darvish had a perfect-game bid going until the ruling that attracted attention all across the majors. With Darvishs no-hit bid intact, Ortiz grounded a two-out single in the ninth inning. "I complain about (it) because it was going to be a second hit, but that was going to be the only hit of the game, I wouldnt bring it up," Ortiz said. The pitcher wasnt concerned about the change. "We won that game," Darvish said through a translator. "Whether it was a one-hitter or two-hitter, we won the game. Thats something that happened in the past. The only thing I care about is the win." MLB confirmed the scoring change Wednesday. But, as is routine on the numerous scoring appeals each week, the league didnt provide an explanation for the reversal. Veteran outfielder Alex Rios and 20-year-old second baseman Rougned Odour, playing his second major league game, both were in position to catch the popup in the seventh. Instead, Rios suddenly slowed and Odor made a late lunge. The ball fell to the ground untouched between them. "Of course it was an error," Texas manager Ron Washington said. "Its an error. Its an out. Its not a ball that somebody (dived) for and missed. Thats an out. It was misplayed so its an out." Ortiz obviously felt differently about the decision. "Its a play that everybody knows once they saw it," he said. "The whole controversy started when they figured he was about to pitch a no-hitter. Its not the first time weve seen that play." "I thought it was a hit in the moment and upon further review obviously they change it, so in the end I think the right call has been made," he said. Likewise on Suarez opener, he exposed Englands backline. The Uruguayan number nine did well to create the needed space on the far post behind Phil Jagielka. The ball played to Suarez by Cavani was all-world. But it was two Uruguayan players on six England defenders. Nobody put pressure on the ball. And to leave Suarez lurking on the far post wasnt good enough. Not to mention is was a missed tackle by Gerrard in the midfield, leading to the attack. Two England centre-backs and two mistakes leading to goals conceded. Cahill and Jagielka are experienced at the position, at least at the club level. They are the best in the country at the position and they were exposed. The best England has at an all-important position and not good enough. Its the same story at the other end of the field. Not good enough. Wayne Rooney and Daniel Sturridge are more than fine players. They are very good. But they are not at the same levels of other top forwards in this tournament, let alone not the top forwards on their own club teams. Therein is the difference. The likes of Rooney and Sturridge require real substance around them to be at their best, and thats fine. Is he really the best England really has? The rest of the midfield is all over the place. The left-side exposed defensively and the movement in attack not creative or consistent. Passing the ball around without purpose wont break down a back line. Its no surprise this area of the field is stagnant and lacks influence. And the manager, oh the manager. Roy Hodgson saw fit to keep Englands double-pivot of Gerrard and Henderson on the field in a game begging for attacking players to breakdown the Uruguayan defensive wall. Comically, two holding players were preferable to keeping on Sterling or Welbeck, or even throwing on a Rickie Lambert until after England went down. The options at Hodgson arent flattering. But neither were the tactics. The very least Hodgson could have done was shuffle the deck. Bring off a defensive midfielder or ineffective wing-back in preference of another attacking player. Change the shape. Instead, the end result of a cautious approach was not good enough. Some will suggest Ashley Cole and Jermain Defoe should have been in the England set-up. Leighton Baines has struggled and another forward option off the bench could have proved decisive. Arguments can be made but how much of a difference they would have made most likely would have been negligible. It made more sense to include Michael Carrick in the squad as a holding midfielder able to provide distribution. But then again, this is a country deeming Paul Scholes not a proper fit to be an England regular over the course of his career. The best England had, but not good enough? Theres a pattern here. Selection issues are nothing new. But no matter who dons the England kit, are they ever good enough? There have been phenomenal performances over the course of the first week of the World Cup, both by individuals and team. Honest assessment would tell the standard of football played by the true top football nations is a step beyond England. Its all very disturbing considering important players for the likes of Chile and Colombia (etc…) are buried in the League Championship, or in some cases not deemed good enough for even that. This should trouble the English to the core. But it wont. Overrating their own talent has become a past-time and feeds the beast. Criticism and finding scapegoats has become a past time. Englands best players are not even the top talent in their own domestic league. Taking a look in the mirror doesnt always cast a pretty reflection. But the look in the mirror is necessary. Acceptance is needed. This was a day England will never have a better context to beat a Uruguay team as such on a stage made for a statement performance. The weather was an ideal 14 degrees Celsius for the hardened English. The opponent was missing two of their preferred back-four. The star player was not 100 per cent. And Uruguays confidence was shaky coming off a shock 3-1 loss. England didnt let it slip away. They were incapable of seizing the moment. It is possible England can still advance from the group stage, even though a team losing their first two games at a World Cup has never done so. Designated players turned out to be old, injury-prone and unreliable while most of Torontos non-DP recruits have all been paid far more than the value they gave on the field. "Youd be amazed how many players are recruited without being watched in person but we want to go and see the players, watch them play, talk to them and we have been to many places doing our due diligence," said Bezbatchenko. There it was again. Due diligence. It is one thing to shop carefully when you have little in your pocket but when the pockets are deep, more doors open, increasing the risk of wasting money. It appears a door remained opened the longest in Brazil and it is there where Bezbatchenko and his team decided to invest. The signing of 24-year-old Gilberto Oliveira Souza Junior represents a new era for the club. No one quite knows just how successful the Brazilian forward will be but what is already clear is that he is the face of a new Toronto FC, on and off the field. Gilberto is Bezbatchenkos guy. The GM may have been handed a difficult hand when taking the job but the two aces in the pack were his future designated players and the money he could use from Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment to attract them here. In an off-season where Toronto FC have attracted a lot of press and attention over the identity of their new DPs, Bezbatchenko and his team deserve tremendous credit at keeping the Gilberto target a secret for as long as they did in Canada. Since the departure of Kevin Payne, Bezbatchenko, MLSE President and CEO Tim Leiweke and head coach Ryan Nelsen have told anyone willing to listen that two designated players will be arriving to play up front for this club next season. Names such as Jermain Defoe, Alberto Gilardino and Samuel Etoo have all been linked with the club, and Defoe appears to have signed ahead of a move in January, but the choice of Gilberto as the second DP over another aging European name takes the club down a different path. It is a path many other MLS clubs have shopped on. The likes of Diego Valeri, Gabriel Torres and Hernan Bernadello are all on a designated player wage in the league but are in their 20s (not a 23 or under DP) and have been signed to play full seasons, and make a significant impact, on the pitch, rather than spending half a season injured lighting up billboards selling tickets. Scouting the likes of a Thierry Henry, Robbie Keane, or a Defoe for that matter, is simple. It doesnt happen. You know how good they are and the work put in to get them is around recruiting and selling your franchise to them. They are outstanding players who make a difference in MLS but the younger, less expensive but potentially just as explosive DPs are a true test of a clubs ability to scout and recruit real talent. And that has taken the clubs recruitment team to Gilberto. The striker arrives in Canada, coming off a season in Brazil where he netted 14 goals for Portuguesa to help them avoid relegation in the final day. He is relatively unknown in North America but two men who know him very well are writers Tim Vickery and Rupert Fryer. "He quite often plays up top on his own, has a nose for goal, is also quick enough to be played behind the defensive line. Doesnt combine a great deal, not really a back to (the) goal player who will bring others into the game," Vickery, BBCs man in Rio, told TSN.ca. "Hes quick, strikes the ball well from distance and has been excellent in front of goal this year, but will arrive in MLS following the first standout season of his career, he could be an excellent signing and clearly has what it takes to score a lot of goals for Toronto, but he is no world beater," Fryer, freelance South Amercian football writer, told TSN.ca. Coming off just one big season in Brazil could lead to some skeptics but Vickery thinks he may have turned the corner: "Confidence is fundamental (with strikers) and now he has had a bigger role - with Portuguesa, where the team performed well above expectations. They played with attacking full backs to stretch the opposing defence to get that ball in behind them early for him to attack and I think he liked that." When asked how he would operate in a front two with someone like Defoe, Fryer said: "He played as a number nine for Portuguesa but Id expect hed be the one charged with dropping behind Defoe if the two teamed up for TFC. The Brazilians pace and willingness to commit defenders one-on-one would make him a better choice for the second striker role." "He has tended to be happier as a lone man up top in a 4-2-3-1. The worry you have with Defoe is both are goal poachers and neither are great combination players," added Vickery. "Not sure if they would be a natural combination off the top and there is not a lot of height in there." How the two new signings connect will be crucial to the teams success and overall structure as a system on the field. It appears both men are finishers rather than creators but those wondering who will supply the strikers should be aware that the requirements of any striker in a good league includes link-up play. In recent years, Defoe has evolved and is actually much more than just a front man who does his damage in the six yard box, or on the shoulders of the last defender. The Englishman enjoys coming deep to link up with teammates and actually showed he was better than an out-of-form Roberto Soldado at that in each of his last two starts for Tottenham in the Premier League, coming deep and drifting to both flanks to be apart of the attack.
