ENGLEWOOD, Colo. Darwin Barney Jersey . -- Though his physical condition is no longer a big question mark for Peyton Manning, when he looks around at training camp, he must feel like hes starting over again. Manning lined up for his first snaps Thursday behind an offensive line that has been shuffled, in front of a running back who took only about 25 per cent of the snaps last year and looking down the line at some pass catchers, who 12 months ago, were either bit players or playing somewhere else. The quarterback who thrived on the familiarity of playing with the same receivers -- Reggie Wayne and Marvin Harrison -- same tight end -- Dallas Clark -- and same running backs -- either Edgerrin James or Joseph Addai -- year after year in Indianapolis, is now having to adjust to a revamped offensive roster to start his third year in Denver. Bottom line: "Just because you did certain things last year means nothing as far as this upcoming season," Manning said. "Ive always felt the NFL does not owe you anything." But even by an NFL rosters constantly shuffling standards, the Broncos did some major reorganizing around their franchise quarterback -- the 43-8 loss to Seattle in the Super Bowl exposing too many problems for the AFC champions to stand pat. The line will be different with the return of Ryan Clady at left tackle and the shifting of Orlando Franklin, who had a poor Super Bowl, from right tackle to left guard. Montee Ball will replace Knowshon Moreno at running back. Meanwhile, Emmanuel Sanders replaces Eric Decker at receiver. And just to accentuate the feel Thursday, former No. 5 receiver Andre Caldwell was getting reps in place of Demaryius Thomas, who was excused to attend his grandmothers funeral. "Were certainly looking for continuity and chemistry with the new players," Manning said. "Every year you have to establish that particular teams identity. Were in the process of doing that right now." John Elway, who put this roster together, said he hopes part of the new identity will take some of the focus off Manning, much the same way he became less of a focal point in his final years, which produced his two Super Bowl wins. "I think that weve got to get to be where were a complete football team," Elway said. "We cant rely on 18 to win it because he cant win it by himself." While Elway was talking more about his off-season revamp of the defence, he has also been making plenty of moves to shore up the parts around Manning, who set records for yards (5,477) and touchdowns (55) last season and also won his fifth Most Valuable Player Award. Ball, last years second-round pick, is viewed as a long-term prospect at running back. The Broncos spent this years second-round pick on receiver Cody Latimer, in the hopes hell be catching passes from Manning and his successor for years to come. In practice Thursday, Manning looked often toward tight end Julius Thomas, the 6-foot-5, 250-pound pass catcher with whom the Broncos are hoping to sign a long-term contract extension. "An important part of the team this year," Manning called him. And a familiar one -- something Manning almost certainly didnt think hed be searching for this hard come Year 3 with the Broncos. "Thats probably the worst thing about football, is when you lose great players from the previous year, who are also great guys," Manning said. "Well certainly miss guys like Eric and Knowshon -- guys youve played in a lot of big games with, guys you put a lot of sweat and work in with in this facility and this weight room. "But its an opportunity for other guys to step up." The two-time reigning BCS champion Crimson Tide have been nothing short of spectacular in rolling to a perfect 7-0 record, outscoring their opponents, 201-16, over the past five games. The dominating display has Alabama No. 1 in the USA Today and Harris Poll and an overall BCS composite of .984. The second spot in the original standings went to Florida State (6-0, .935) following its thorough 51-14 blowout of former title contender Clemson on Saturday. The strength of the Seminoles schedule gave them the No. 1 spot in the computer rankings and a slight edge over Oregon (7-0), which sits third at .932 despite not being seriously tested thus far. That may change Saturday when the Ducks host UCLA. A weekend full of upsets resulted in a lot of changes in the polls, as Cllemson, UCLA, LSU, Texas A&M and Louisville all lost. Jurickson Profar Jersey. . Ten unbeaten teams remain, including Ohio State and Missouri, which came in at fourth and fifth, respectively, in the BCS poll. Stanford, Miami-Florida, Baylor, Clemson and Texas Tech round out the top-10, while potential BCS busters Fresno State (6-0) and Northern Illinois (7-0) sit at 17 and 18, respectively. Stanford is the highest ranked one-loss team. This is the final year the national championship will be determined by the BCS standings, which factor in the USA Today Poll, the Harris Poll and six computer rankings. A highly anticipated four-team playoff will be installed for the 2014 season. Alabama and Notre Dame played in the BCS final last year, and the Crimson Tide won handily, 42-14, en route to their third championship in four years. The win also extended the SECs streak to seven consecutive national champions. ' ' '

LOUISVILLE, KY -- There is one thing about Tiger Woods that his friends, family and peers know: he is really, really, really stubborn. Stitched NFL Jerseys . If you say there is no way to do something, hell try it. If you say he shouldnt do something this way, hell do it. He is a contrarian to be sure. For that reason, it would surprise no one if he were to show up on the 10th tee at Valhalla at 8:35am on Thursday morning. Despite being driven off the course at Firestone after jarring his recently repaired back, Woods is apparently still hoping to play the last major of the year. At least, so far he hasnt said he isnt playing. At this point, all we know about the situation is what we dont know. We dont know how severely he hurt his back. We dont know if hes able to swing a club and practice. And we most certainly dont know when we will be hearing his decision. According to a text message sent to ESPN.coms Bob Harig by agent Mark Steinberg, there is no timetable for deciding. It might happen in the next hour or it might not happen until 8:34am on Thursday. Those who know Tiger say he loves to be the contrarian, loves to prove the doubters wrong. Many think he cant make the FedEx Cup playoffs, where he sits 217th, but Tiger likely thinks thats still possible. Same for the Ryder Cup, even though captain Tom Watson said the latest injury doesnt bode well for making Woods a pick. If Woods misses the PGA at Valhalla, where he won the title back in 2000 in a memorable playoff over Bob May, it will mark the seventh time injuries have forced him to the sidelines in a major since he last captured one back in 2008. Some have pointed to the recovery time taken by Graham DeLaet who sat out the better part of an entire season following similar surgery to Woods. While no two operations or patients are the same, its interesting to note that DeLaet went under the knife in January and made his return to play in June. He teed it up three times before shutting things down again. He played one further event, a Web.com Tour stop in September and then didnt reappear until January. The Canadian felt that more time on the sidelines would benefit his long-term career. So far, thats been the case. He plays almost pain-free although does experience a little twinge every now and again. For Woods, the question must be asked: what would he gain by playing? In his past few starts, while there have been glimpses of good play, there is nothing to suggest he is going to contend for this major. Or finish high enough to make the FedEx Cup playoffs or tempt Watson to pick him for Gleneagles. But dont tell that to Tiger. If you say he cant, hell do all he can to say he can, bad back and all. Yu Darvishs recent no-hit bid now officially ended in the seventh inning, not the ninth. Major League Baseball overturned a disputed scoring decision from Friday nights game between the Texas Rangers and Red Sox. Acting on an appeal by Boston slugger David Ortiz, MLB changed an error in the seventh to a single on a high fly that dropped untouched between fielders. Ortiz said Wednesday that he wouldnt have appealed the play if it had been a no-hitter. Darvish had a perfect-game bid going until the ruling that attracted attention all across the majors. With Darvishs no-hit bid intact, Ortiz grounded a two-out single in the ninth inning. "I complain about (it) because it was going to be a second hit, but that was going to be the only hit of the game, I wouldnt bring it up," Ortiz said. The pitcher wasnt concerned about the change. "We won that game," Darvish said through a translator. "Whether it was a one-hitter or two-hitter, we won the game. Thats something that happened in the past. The only thing I care about is the win." MLB confirmed the scoring change Wednesday. But, as is routine on the numerous scoring appeals each week, the league didnt provide an explanation for the reversal. Veteran outfielder Alex Rios and 20-year-old second baseman Rougned Odour, playing his second major league game, both were in position to catch the popup in the seventh. Instead, Rios suddenly slowed and Odor made a late lunge. The ball fell to the ground untouched between them. "Of course it was an error," Texas manager Ron Washington said. "Its an error. Its an out. Its not a ball that somebody (dived) for and missed. Thats an out. It was misplayed so its an out." Ortiz obviously felt differently about the decision. "Its a play that everybody knows once they saw it," he said. "The whole controversy started when they figured he was about to pitch a no-hitter. Its not the first time weve seen that play." Red Sox manager John Farrell sided with his player. "I thought it was a hit in the moment and upon further review obviously they change it, so in the end I think the right call has been made," he said. Official scorer Steve Weller, in his 20th season working MLB games, charged Rios with an error. While that ended a perfect game, Darvishs no-hit bid was still intact. Weller made a judgment call that Rios, with normal effort, could have made a routine catch. "I dont think theres a lot of argument about that," Weller told a pool reporter after the game. Even Ortiz acknowledged that the ball should have been caught. Rios also didnt dispute the error. Weller watched numerous replays and conferred with Elias Sports Bureau, the sports longtime record-keeper. He cited MLB rules that a ball doesnt have to be touched to be an error. If a fly ball drops to the ground, the official scorer can charge an error if, in his judgment, the outfielder "making ordinary effort would have caught" it. Once Ortiz got the single in the ninth, the slugger decided to appeal the play in the seventh. Darvish, who had his scheduled start on Wednesday pushed back to Friday, even joked about the incident. "If that error, or the error that became a hit in the seventh inning, if that would have been decided a hit during the game I would probably have to pitch today," he said. "So it would probably help my career not to throw that many pitches if it had been decided during the game." He then jokingly thanked Big Papi. "I wanted to appreciate Ortiz," he said with a laugh. We missed him, theres no question about it, Dwane Casey said of Amir Johnson, a late scratch just ahead of the Raptors 107-102 loss in Miami, their 16th-straight defeat to the Heat and 10th-consecutive in South Beach. He gives you another roller to the basket, a guy who can score a little bit in the paint, he continued. He’s been doing a good job of scoring, he’s been doing a good job defensively. Johnson tweaked his troublesome left ankle early in Saturdays win over the Magic, staying in that game, but logging only 24 minutes. After getting pre-game treatment Sunday, he was ruled out - the teams medical staff opting for caution thisearly in the season. The Heat were without a couple of their bigs, as well. Chris Andersen missed the game with a bruised rib, while veteran Udonis Haslem continues to nurse a quad ailment. Returning from an injury, Josh McRoberts was only available to play spot minutes. With Miami playing small ball around the versatile Chris Bosh, this was a game in which the Raptors could have used their best help and rim defender. Tonight would have been a perfect game for Amir, DeMar DeRozan admitted after the loss. That’s Amir’s game. Do all the dirty work, rebound or even the tap outs to give us the chance to get the rebound. The most glaring disparity was the one on the boards. Toronto grabbed just 10 rebounds in the first half - compared to 24 for Miami - and was bested 43-28 on the glass in the game. Almost as concerning, the Heat shot an alarming 72 per cent at the rim and 63 per cent in the paint. Although they led the NBA in that category last year, they did it with LeBron James and managed 47 per cent in the painted area. The Raptors held opponents to 39 per cent shooting in the paint last season. That just wasn’t us, said DeRozan, who led Toronto with 30 points on the night. We just didn’t play good at all. You have to give credit to the Heat. They still played good, but things we can control, like making free throws and rebounding, that’s on us. Certainly, there were issues that went beyond the absence of Johnson and its purely speculative thinking to suggest that the final result would have been different with him in the line-up. Although Johnson would have probably put a dent in the rebounding disparity, its unlikely he would have pulled down 15. Bosh and Dwyane Wade each nearly out-rebounded the Raptors starters on their own.ddddddddddddHe also wouldnt have made up for the missed free throws - uncharacteristic for Toronto. They missed 15 of 39 attempts at the line, 11 courtesy of DeRozan and Kyle Lowry. Patrick Patterson started in place of Johnson and was held without a point or rebound in just under 15 minutes of action, a night after shooting 1-for-7 in Orlando. For Pat to have an off-night, it shouldn’t have been tonight, Casey said, unprompted after the game A lot of times guys will let their offensive woes go to the defensive end, he said of Pattersons early-season struggles. He had no rebounds and we’ve got to have him on the boards if Amir’s not there and he didn’t do that. Missing Amir was there, but that can’t be an excuse. Someone has to step up. The Raptors need more from Patterson, with or without Johnson in the line-up. A big part of their post-trade success last season and anchoring the teams improved second unit, Patterson was re-signed over the summer to replicate his 2013-14 impact and serve as insurance for Johnson. Prior to coming over from Sacramento, he had gotten off to a slow start last year as well. The forward shot just 41 per cent from the field and 23 per cent from three-point range in 17 games with the Kings before improving those clips to 48 per cent and 41 per cent, respectively, in Toronto. I will fix this, Patterson tweeted Monday. Of course, Johnson will be a free agent at the end of the campaign. Sunday nights game served as an early-season reminder of what makes him so valuable - his defence, rebounding, screening and spacing - and what makes him such a long-term risk - his wonky ankles. Johnson under went a procedure on his left ankle back in 2011. Although he didnt require surgery this summer - after turning both ankles on several occasions last season - he took a more innovative, preventative approach, spending time at the P3 (Peak Performance Project) sports clinic in Santa Barbara, California, studying methods that may help avoid future injury. A lot of those techniques - planting, jumping and landing differently - require him to alter learned muscle memory. Theyre helpful tools, but wont necessarily stave off the injury bug. More than ever the Raptors will need him as close to full health as possible at the end of the season and into the playoffs, a big reason why they made the decision to rest him early in the year. Hes considered day-to-day, but theyll continue to monitor his health and wont risk this becoming a nagging issue. ' ' '

SURREY, B. Air Max 1 Sale Cheap .C. - The B.C. Lions announced Wednesday that the club and offensive co-ordinator Jacques Chapdelaine have mutually agreed to part ways. Chapdelaines offence struggled for long stretches during the second half of the 2013 season after starting quarterback Travis Lulay went down with a shoulder injury. The Lions, who lost in the CFL West Division final to the Saskatchewan Roughriders, were criticized for a lack of imagination under Chapdelaines leadership, with the running game practically non-existent for long stretches. "Jacques has been a big part of our past success," B.C. head coach Mike Benevides said in a statement. "He presided over two championship offences and two most outstanding players during his time with the club and I am grateful for his hard work and dedication during our time together. "At this time however, we agree that it is in the best interest of both parties to proceed in a new direction." The 52-year-old started his career with the Lions in 2003 as the teams receivers coach and was promoted to offensive co-ordinator in 2005 under former head coach Wally Buono. After B.C. won the Grey Cup in 2006, Chapdelaine became the offensive co-ordinator of the Edmonton Eskimos. He returned to the Lions the following year as receivers coach and got his old job back as offensive co-ordinator in 2010, helping the team win another Grey Cup in 2011. "After taking some time to reflect on this past season, Ive concluded that both I and the B.C. Martin was among seven cyclists who moved away from the peloton, with the German cyclist pulling ahead of a breakaway group that included Maxim Montfort and Jan Bakelandts just over 10 kilometres (6.2 miles) from the finish. "At 15 kilometres to go, we knew to try and win this race -- so I attacked the breakaway," said Martin, who won a leg that included four categorized climbs by 30 seconds in a time of 3 hours, 46 minutes, 17 seconds. Contador allowed the breakaways to ride out of sight as he stayed close to closest challenger Alejandro Valverde, who attempted to escape late in the 155.8-kilometre (99-mile) stage to no avail. "Alejandro attacked, and I would have done the same thing if I was in his situation," Contador said. Air Max 1 Wholesale. BESANCON, France -- With defending champion Chris Froome and two-time winner Alberto Contador out of the race, the path is wide open for Vincenzo Nibali to become the first Italian to win the Tour de France since the late Marco Pantani in 1998. Jordan Zimmermann Jersey . The French have waited even longer for a champion -- the last was Bernard Hinault way back in 1985 -- but with three riders in the top six places, hopes are growing of at least a first podium place since climber Richard Virenque finished second in 1997. After Tuesdays rest day, the race resumes with Stage 11 on Wednesday, followed by arduous mountain stages on Friday and Saturday which will reveal the genuine contenders. These are where Nibalis climbing skills could set him apart, and give him a chance to fully stamp his authority on the race. There are five days of hard climbing ahead, starting with Fridays 197.5-kilometre (122.4-mile) trek from Saint-Etienne to Chamrousse, which ends with a huge ascent of 18 kilometres (11.2 miles). As for Nibalis rivals, Contador broke his shin in a violent fall in Mondays 10th stage and Froome pulled out on stage 5 with a broken wrist. "Im not happy about what happened to Alberto and Chris," the 29-year-old Nibali said. "The climbs would have been better and more spectacular for everyone." Nibali, who won the Spanish Vuelta in 2010 and the Giro dItalia in 2013, is 2 minutes, 23 seconds ahead of Australian Richie Porte and 2:47 clear of Spaniard Alejandro Valverde, who won the Vuelta five years ago. Three Frenchmen are within four minutes of Nibali -- Romain Bardet, Tony Gallopin and Thibaut Pinot. None has come close to a podium place on a Grand Tour, although the 23-year-old Bardet and the 24-year-old Pinot have strong climbing skills. "Weve got to stay calm and study the situation," Nibali said. "The danger can come from anywhere." Porte rode as a key support rider for Froome last year on the Sky team, but now has free reign to attack. "Porte goes well in the climbs, he goes well in time trials, you have to keep a good distance on him," Nibali said. "You have to watch Valverde, he can attack at any time." The 34-year-old Valverde was handed a two-year suspension in 2010 for his involvement in the Operation Puerto doping plot, which involved dozens of riders over secretly stored blood bags. Like Nibali, Pantani was a courageous cyclist who loved to attack in the tough climbs. Pantani was found dead in a hotel room on Valentines Day in 2004 and a coroner ruled he died from cocaine poisoning. Fridays stage will also be special for Nibali because it marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of two-time Tour champion Gino Bartali, who died in 2000 at the age of 85. "As an Italian, its a huge privilege to be asked about Bartali. I grew up watching documentaries on the big riders, the big wins of (Felice) Gimondi, Bartali and (Fausto) Coppi," Nibali said. "Theyre all in the encyclopedia of cycling. There are others like Hinault, too. Theyve written the history of cycling." Buehrle is 10-4 with a 2.32 earned run average, but has lost his last three starts, including a 7-3 setback at Yankee Stadium last Wednesday. It shouldnt come as a disappointment anymore for England supporters. They are used to this. Losing. It isnt underachieving when the team isnt good enough. This is as good as it gets. Whenever Englands Brazilian journey comes to an end (they havent been eliminated, yet) the diehard support and those responsible for overseeing English football will hold on to the positive moments. Flashes of ability and promise are what constitute hope. "They werent that bad" is excused as progress. The play of the likes of Sturridge and Sterling, and the futures of Barkley and Shaw will be used as evidence brighter days ahead. Yawn. Weve heard this before. Weve done this song and dance. The days of a semi-final shoot-out loss in Italia 90 are long gone. Lets not go back to 1966. The failures have piled on, one less painful than the next. Success would be a surprise. Losses to more intelligent and superior football nations are the expectation. The English should be immune from the feeling of devastation or outrage. From a Golden Generation not good enough, to the likes of Rooney, Lampard and Gerrard who have failed to capture the imagination. Its a vicious cycle of mediocrity. A 2-1 loss to Uruguay is just the latest chapter. England was poor. Nothing new. The how it happened is what drives home the obvious. Too weak in too many areas and lacking true top talent to break down their competition. Out-managed. Out-witted. Out-classed. Uruguay only completed a pathetic 64 per cent of passes. The South Americans struggled in build up and were content to sit back. It was an astute page out of Italys book from Englands opening match; sit-back and force England to break you down. Dont get beat for speed. And counter-attack. Thats what Uruguay did, and credit for executing. They got stuck in and remained organized. Forget basic statistics telling you England dominated possession with Uruguay on the back-foot. It was calculated. It worked to perfection. A basic approach against a basic team. Simple. The game winning goal incredibly came directly from the Uruguayan goalkeeper Fernando Muslera. A ball put on the ground and a long ball played out. Simple to defend, right? Apparently not. Edinson Cavani dropped deep all match to expose long-in-the-tooth Steven Gerrard sitting on top of the England backline. For what the England captain has in experience, he lacks in legs because of the kilometers accumulated. Cavanis aerial challenge of Gerrard forced a wayward header backwards from the England midfielder. Luis Suarez, as proper poachers do, tucked in behind the backline looking for an advantage. He gambled and he won, as Gary Cahill got caught. Suarez was clinical in finish and again showed his special talent. A game breaker and match winner, something England doesnt have. Likewise on Suarez opener, he exposed Englands backline. The Uruguayan number nine did well to create the needed space on the far post behind Phil Jagielka. The ball played to Suarez by Cavani was all-world. But it was two Uruguayan players on six England defenders. Nobody put pressure on the ball. And to leave Suarez lurking on the far post wasnt good enough. Not to mention is was a missed tackle by Gerrard in the midfield, leading to the attack. Two England centre-backs and two mistakes leading to goals conceded. Cahill and Jagielka are experienced at the position, at least at the club level. They are the best in the country at the position and they were exposed. The best England has at an all-important position and not good enough. Its the same story at the other end of the field. Not good enough. Wayne Rooney and Daniel Sturridge are more than fine players. They are very good. But they are not at the same levels of other top forwards in this tournament, let alone not the top forwards on their own club teams. Therein is the difference. The likes of Rooney and Sturridge require real substance around them to be at their best, and thats fine. They are better the complimentary piece rather than the focus at this level. p; When played appropriately, they can shine. Air Force 1 Clearance Sale. In this England team, their play often times is representative of the whole. These are the best England has and they are not good enough. The midfield, a make-shift, comprised of decent parts with no direction on how its supposed to work. Jordan Henderson had a fine season on a good attacking Liverpool team. Yet something suggests he has the makings of becoming the next Sinclair, Wright-Phillips, Mills, or Parker – take your pick of the long list of players youll ask, "Did he really play for England?" Is he really the best England really has? The rest of the midfield is all over the place. The left-side exposed defensively and the movement in attack not creative or consistent. Passing the ball around without purpose wont break down a back line. Its no surprise this area of the field is stagnant and lacks influence. And the manager, oh the manager. Roy Hodgson saw fit to keep Englands double-pivot of Gerrard and Henderson on the field in a game begging for attacking players to breakdown the Uruguayan defensive wall. Comically, two holding players were preferable to keeping on Sterling or Welbeck, or even throwing on a Rickie Lambert until after England went down. The options at Hodgson arent flattering. But neither were the tactics. The very least Hodgson could have done was shuffle the deck. Bring off a defensive midfielder or ineffective wing-back in preference of another attacking player. Change the shape. Instead, the end result of a cautious approach was not good enough. Some will suggest Ashley Cole and Jermain Defoe should have been in the England set-up. Leighton Baines has struggled and another forward option off the bench could have proved decisive. Arguments can be made but how much of a difference they would have made most likely would have been negligible. It made more sense to include Michael Carrick in the squad as a holding midfielder able to provide distribution. But then again, this is a country deeming Paul Scholes not a proper fit to be an England regular over the course of his career. The best England had, but not good enough? Theres a pattern here. Selection issues are nothing new. But no matter who dons the England kit, are they ever good enough? There have been phenomenal performances over the course of the first week of the World Cup, both by individuals and team. Honest assessment would tell the standard of football played by the true top football nations is a step beyond England. Its all very disturbing considering important players for the likes of Chile and Colombia (etc…) are buried in the League Championship, or in some cases not deemed good enough for even that. This should trouble the English to the core. But it wont. Overrating their own talent has become a past-time and feeds the beast. Criticism and finding scapegoats has become a past time. In reality, these are the best players they have. And they are not good enough. The Premier League is the most entertaining league in the world and the most popular. It is not the best. Englands best players are not even the top talent in their own domestic league. Taking a look in the mirror doesnt always cast a pretty reflection. But the look in the mirror is necessary. Acceptance is needed. This was a day England will never have a better context to beat a Uruguay team as such on a stage made for a statement performance. The weather was an ideal 14 degrees Celsius for the hardened English. The opponent was missing two of their preferred back-four. The star player was not 100 per cent. And Uruguays confidence was shaky coming off a shock 3-1 loss. England didnt let it slip away. They were incapable of seizing the moment. It is possible England can still advance from the group stage, even though a team losing their first two games at a World Cup has never done so. Italy must beat Costa Rica then Uruguay, and England will need a comprehensive victory over the Ticos to have superior goal differential. But really, would that constitute success? Squeaking by would be as good as it gets for a team not good enough. ' ' '

Due diligence. Cheap Hoodies From China . It was said at least three times but as the music blared out louder there may have been a fourth one sneaked in. At a media get-together this week, I asked Toronto FC general manager Tim Bezbatchenko about how important it was for the team to scout and recruit better. The 32-year-old nodded his head often throughout my question. He had watched, as an outsider from the league offices, Toronto FC repeatedly throw darts at the transfer market - both domestically and overseas - in the hope they would be able to somehow hit the bullseye. Not surprisingly, watching players on DVDs and getting tips from agents you know well didnt work out. The darts thrown not only missed the board but came back to hit them directly in the face. Designated players turned out to be old, injury-prone and unreliable while most of Torontos non-DP recruits have all been paid far more than the value they gave on the field. "Youd be amazed how many players are recruited without being watched in person but we want to go and see the players, watch them play, talk to them and we have been to many places doing our due diligence," said Bezbatchenko. There it was again. Due diligence. It is one thing to shop carefully when you have little in your pocket but when the pockets are deep, more doors open, increasing the risk of wasting money. It appears a door remained opened the longest in Brazil and it is there where Bezbatchenko and his team decided to invest. The signing of 24-year-old Gilberto Oliveira Souza Junior represents a new era for the club. No one quite knows just how successful the Brazilian forward will be but what is already clear is that he is the face of a new Toronto FC, on and off the field. Gilberto is Bezbatchenkos guy. The GM may have been handed a difficult hand when taking the job but the two aces in the pack were his future designated players and the money he could use from Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment to attract them here. Aces have been held in the hands of past GMs at this club but far too often, they showed too many people their cards. In an off-season where Toronto FC have attracted a lot of press and attention over the identity of their new DPs, Bezbatchenko and his team deserve tremendous credit at keeping the Gilberto target a secret for as long as they did in Canada. Since the departure of Kevin Payne, Bezbatchenko, MLSE President and CEO Tim Leiweke and head coach Ryan Nelsen have told anyone willing to listen that two designated players will be arriving to play up front for this club next season. Names such as Jermain Defoe, Alberto Gilardino and Samuel Etoo have all been linked with the club, and Defoe appears to have signed ahead of a move in January, but the choice of Gilberto as the second DP over another aging European name takes the club down a different path. It is a path many other MLS clubs have shopped on. The likes of Diego Valeri, Gabriel Torres and Hernan Bernadello are all on a designated player wage in the league but are in their 20s (not a 23 or under DP) and have been signed to play full seasons, and make a significant impact, on the pitch, rather than spending half a season injured lighting up billboards selling tickets. Scouting the likes of a Thierry Henry, Robbie Keane, or a Defoe for that matter, is simple. It doesnt happen. You know how good they are and the work put in to get them is around recruiting and selling your franchise to them. They are outstanding players who make a difference in MLS but the younger, less expensive but potentially just as explosive DPs are a true test of a clubs ability to scout and recruit real talent. And that has taken the clubs recruitment team to Gilberto. The striker arrives in Canada, coming off a season in Brazil where he netted 14 goals for Portuguesa to help them avoid relegation in the final day. He is relatively unknown in North America but two men who know him very well are writers Tim Vickery and Rupert Fryer. "He quite often plays up top on his own, has a nose for goal, is also quick enough to be played behind the defensive line. Doesnt combine a great deal, not really a back to (the) goal player who will bring others into the game," Vickery, BBCs man in Rio, told TSN.ca. "Hes quick, strikes the ball well from distance and has been excellent in front of goal this year, but will arrive in MLS following the first standout season of his career, he could be an excellent signing and clearly has what it takes to score a lot of goals for Toronto, but he is no world beater," Fryer, freelance South Amercian football writer, told TSN.ca. Coming off just one big season in Brazil could lead to some skeptics but Vickery thinks he may have turned the corner: "Confidence is fundamental (with strikers) and now he has had a bigger role - with Portuguesa, where the team performed well above expectations. They played with attacking full backs to stretch the opposing defence to get that ball in behind them early for him to attack and I think he liked that." When asked how he would operate in a front two with someone like Defoe, Fryer said: "He played as a number nine for Portuguesa but Id expect hed be the one charged with dropping behind Defoe if the two teamed up for TFC. The Brazilians pace and willingness to commit defenders one-on-one would make him a better choice for the second striker role." "He has tended to be happier as a lone man up top in a 4-2-3-1. The worry you have with Defoe is both are goal poachers and neither are great combination players," added Vickery. "Not sure if they would be a natural combination off the top and there is not a lot of height in there." How the two new signings connect will be crucial to the teams success and overall structure as a system on the field. It appears both men are finishers rather than creators but those wondering who will supply the strikers should be aware that the requirements of any striker in a good league includes link-up play. The pair will not be standing together on the penalty spot, waiting for the ball, like they are waiting for a bus. In recent years, Defoe has evolved and is actually much more than just a front man who does his damage in the six yard box, or on the shoulders of the last defender. The Englishman enjoys coming deep to link up with teammates and actually showed he was better than an out-of-form Roberto Soldado at that in each of his last two starts for Tottenham in the Premier League, coming deep and drifting to both flanks to be apart of the attack. Should Defoe sign in January, as expected, the attacking duo that Bezbatchenko will have put together may have some work to do as a partnership but at least this time the club will have its aces ready to go when the cards are finally dealt come opening weekend next March. TORONTO – Doing just enough to lose hockey games, the Maple Leafs playoff chances are dangling on an ever-thinning thread. Wholesale NFL Jerseys . They matched their second-longest losing skid of the year on Saturday evening, making an error too many in their fourth straight loss, a stinging 4-3 defeat to Montreal at the ACC. Falling further back of the Canadiens – now a five-point gap – and the surging Lightning for the final two spots in the Atlantic division, Toronto is hanging onto to the first wild card position in the East, in danger of falling out altogether if change doesnt come soon enough. “Weve been close, but close isnt good enough right now,” said Dion Phaneuf of four straight losses, all against fellow Eastern contenders vying for a spot in the post-season. Like in narrow losses to Washington, Detroit and Tampa previously, the Leafs shot themselves in the foot just a time or too many on this night, dropping the season series to Montreal in the process. “The margin of error now in these games is so, so, so close that one bounce or one misplay or one unfortunate mistake cost us points,” said head coach Randy Carlyle afterward. A stumbling start and more ineffective goaltending certainly didnt help matters, but it was simple errors in execution that ultimately set the stage for another defeat. Most notable among them were mistakes from two of the teams best players. There was an early and careless neutral zone turnover from Phil Kessel that fed the Canadiens first goal and a later failure from Dion Phaneuf to clear the puck that found the back of the net on Tomas Plekanecs eventual game-winner. “We worked hard,” said Carlyle, his team rallying from a pair of deficits. “[But] we have to work equally as hard and clean up some of the mistakes that we make. Turn the puck over in the neutral ice and it comes back to haunt you. Make a mistake on a turnover penalty killing and it comes back and haunts you. Those are difference-makers in the games and thats what happens when the intensity ramps up in all these games.” Running wild with points in the weeks before and after the Olympic break, Toronto had not lost four straight since the early days of January. They vaulted to 11 wins in 14 games after that stinging streak, requiring a similar resurgence now to keep hold of a second straight playoff berth. The sky may be falling in certain pockets of the city with memories of the infamous 18-wheeler still fresh, but in reality the Leafs situation is not dire to the point that they cant right themselves with 10 games to play. Theyve lost a series of close games of late, doing just enough to lose on each given night. Losses count the same though and that tide – now trending in the negative with clubs in Detroit, Washington and Columbus hunting them down – has to start shifting for the better in a hurry with the Devils up next on Sunday night. “Were still in a good spot,” said Phaneuf, ever optimistic afterward. “Obviously weve slid a little bit because of not winning games, but were still right there.” Five Points 1. Stunted Starts Toronto allowed the first goal for the sixth consecutive game and 37th time this season, actually falling behind by two for the fourth time in those six games. And while they managed to erase that deficit in short order, the trend of digging early holes is a definite negative at this point in the year and any point for that matter. “Its tough coming back,” said James Reimer of the constant need for rallies. “Weve proven that we can do it. Weve got enough character and desire in here to fight back in games, but it obviously makes it a lot tougher on ourselves.” Capitalizing on Kessels giveaway on the opener from Max Pacioretty, Montreal jumped ahead by two on a Rene Bourque breakaway, the Canadiens winger storming by the pair of Cody Franson and Jake Gardiner before beating Reimer with a weak shot glove-side. “I think maybe we just all need to be a little sharper when it starts and obviously me included,” said Reimer. The Leafs dropped to 11-22-4 when yielding the first goal this season. 2. Just Okay Reimers inability to fill the hole left by Jonathan Bernier continued Saturday with the 26-year-old yielding four goals on 36 shots. He owns a .899 save percentage during six appearances in place of the teams injured No. 1. Though he made some fine stops in allowing his team to rally from the early 2-0 hole – including a glove stop just moments before Joffrey Lupul scored the Leafs first goal – Reimer ultimately could not deliver enough of the timely big saves required for victory. This was evident on Plekanecs game-winner. Reimer slid right to left on Andrei Markovs cross-ice feed to Plekanec, but could not keep the shot – from just above the goal-line – from finding a slight hole. “I feel like its a tough bounce,” he said. “Obviously they made a good play to put it through the seam, but I thought I gave myself a chance to get over there, but it just found a way through.” Reimer remains winless on home ice since Jan. 15, last winning a start on Jan. 21. Bernier meanwhile continues to inch back from a groin injury, but not quickly enough for the teams recent fortunes. The 25-year-old skated for a third straight day Saturday morning, but will miss his fifth straight game Sunday against the Devils. “He still has some issues as far as hes not 100 per cent,” said Carlyle, “so until hes 100 per cent hes not available to us.” 3. Slow Ride A slogging rehabilitation of nearly five months finally came to an end Saturday for Dave Bolland, who returned to the Toronto lineup against Montreal. It was the first game for the 27-year-old since Nov. 2, when a tendon on the outside of his left ankle was sliced by the skate blade of Canucks forward Zack Kassian. He missed 56 games. “Hes progressed along over the last three weeks to a point where he feels and the doctors feel medically thats he close to a 100 per cent ready,” said Carlyle, wary of driving up expectations for Bolland, a favourite of his upon landing with the Leafs last summer. “I dont want to put too much emphasis on him specifically because when a player hasnt played in 60 games its a lot to ask of him to come back in and be where he wouldve been coming out of training camp and playing with our hockey club early in the season.” Bollands addition gave Carlyle his first full group of forwards at any point this season with neither injuries nor suspensions on the docket. All of which allowed him to comfortably employ four lines in the fashion he may have imagined at the start of the year. Indicative of a balanced attack and a considerable shift from recent weeks and much of the year, Colton Orr was the lone forward to play fewer than eight minutes against Montreal. “It gives you a little bit more depth throughout your lineup, a veteran guy, and it kind of slots people more into where we envisioned them at the beginning of the year,” said Carlyle, who reunited Bolland with Mason Raymond and David Clarkson. Bolland, whom the Leafs made room for by sending Carter Ashton and Peter Holland to the Marlies, was lost to injury in early November just a week after Tyler Bozak went out with a hamstring issue, drastically affecting the teams depth at centre ice. He played nine minutes against the Canadiens, keeping his shift lengths short at just 33 seconds. “That first shift was probably the hardest,” Bolland said. “Its getting the timing and figuring things out out there. You sort of got to get used to it. I think the heartbeat was hurting a little bit too.” 4. Secondary Offence Joffrey Lupul and Nazem Kadri had combined for four goals in the previous 14 games, but landed a pair against the Canadiens. Lupul fired a rocket by Carey Price for the Leafs first goal midway through the first, Kadri depositing a feed from his 30-year-old teammate on a power play goal later which evened the score at three. With Phil Kessel and the teams top line cooling some in recent days – they did account for the second Toronto goal with Tyler Bozak notching his 16th – contributions from the likes of Lupul and Kadri will be required in the final weeks of the regular season. Toronto forwards had only seven goals in the previous six games, but accounted for all three on Saturday. 5. Ranger on the Mend Paul Ranger was in predictable shock in the immediate aftermath, but realized hed be okay when he was able to move his legs, hands and feet. Reversing to his left with less than five seconds remaining in the first period of a Wednesday tilt with Tampa, the 29-year-old was drilled from behind by Lightning forward Alex Killorn. He was helped off the ice on a stretcher, his teammates looking on with concern. “I remember just feeling pain,” said Ranger, suffering a neck injury on the play. “I know that my body and my mind just went into preservation mode. All I could think was just dont move, stay straight and breathe. I just kind of breathed three in, three out for the next 3-4 hours.” Ranger was taken to a local hospital that night, assessed and discharged. He remained off the ice for a third straight day Saturday and did not play against the Canadiens, his impending return to the line-up uncertain. Though he received word from Killorn in the aftermath of the collision, believing that no harm was intended, the Whitby, Ontario native nonetheless hopes that hits from behind receive more attention and study for improvement. “I think its something that happens a lot in our game and its dangerous,” he said. “Im thankful Im really strong physically and really fit and I think that really helped and probably saved me a little bit in this situation. I wouldnt want anyone else to go through that period, but especially someone whos maybe not as strong or not as heavy you could say.” Stats-Pack 212 – Man games lost to injury for the Leafs this season, including 56 from Dave Bolland, who returned from an ankle injury against Montreal. 2-2-1 – Leafs record versus the Canadiens this season. 9:01 – Ice-time for Dave Bolland in his first game since Nov. 2. .899 – Save percentage for James Reimer since Jonathan Bernier went out with injury. 5 – Number of 20-goal seasons for Joffrey Lupul, who scored his 20th of the year against Montreal. 8:54 – Ice-time for David Clarkson on Saturday, his lowest of the season. 11-22-4 – Leafs record this season when they allow the first goal. The Americans, skipped by John Shuster, seized the advantage in the eighth end by scoring five points for a 7-3 lead. The Czechs pulled two back in the ninth, but Shusters team of third Jeff Isaacson, second Jared Zezel and lead John Landsteiner ended with another point to secure the last Olympic berth on offer. The Americans, coached by Tim Muller with Craig Brown at alternate, had kept their qualification hopes alive with a 7-5 win over South Korea in Saturdays tiebreaker. "We always seem to pick it up and bring it up the next step and find a way to play better in a game," Landsteiner said. The U.S. won its final five games at the World Curling Federations qualification event in the Bavarian town of Fuessen, and the Shuster rink will now be nominated to the U.S. Olympic team pending approval by the United States Olympic Committee. "The butterflies of winning for an opportunity like this, they never get old. Thats why we play this game," said Shuster, who won Olympic bronze in 2006 in the lead position. "These guys work their tails off and theyre some of the best in the business. Im extremely proud of how well our team has played the entire season and especially here when we had our backs against the wall," the 31-year-old Shuster said. Jiri Snitils Czech rink was playing its second playoff in as many days after losing to Germany for the first Olympic berth on Saturday. China qualified for the womens tournament in Sochi next year by beating Japan 7-6 in the playoff between the first and second-ranked teams. Japan was to get another chance to secure qualification in its playoff against third-place Norway on Sunday evening. Mike Moustakas Jersey . Pinch-hitter Tommy Medica singled in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and the Padres beat the Seattle Mariners 2-1 in their first home game since Gwynn died of cancer Monday.WINNIPEG -- The experiment is only a couple of games old, but new Winnipeg Jets coach Paul Maurice says hes leaving Dustin Byfuglien at forward for now. "Im going to leave him there until I . . . see something that I need to change," he said Tuesday. "That may be next week, that may be next month, that may be never. But Im not making a decision until I need to." Maurice was impressed with how Byfuglien played in Winnipegs 5-1 win over the Phoenix Coyotes on Monday night. "I think I have a pretty good handle on what hes capable of doing and I think you saw that," the coach said after a short but intense practice. Byfuglien had two assists versus Phoenix and remains the third highest-scoring defenceman in the league with 37 points. He still jumps back in on the point on power plays although at even strength he plays forward. "Sometimes its a little tough to stay on the point but its good I get out there a little more," Byfuglien says. "Im more comfortable on D so its a lot easier to go back there and just feel comfortable and know that Im doing a lot better." Although he played forward with the Chicago Blackhawks, Byfuglien says he still doesnt feel all that comfortable in the role with the Jets. "Definitely not. It will take a few weeks for that one." Maurice was pleased overall with the energy level the team showed Tuesday and says there may be too much focus on Byfuglien, in particular if he makes a mistake when many other players in a similar position go unnoticed. "We are a far better hockey team with Dustin Byfuglien at forward or at D playing close to his abilities," Maurice said. "Thats my goal. . . At the end of the day, if Ive got a guy I feel can play at the back end and up front, then thats (a) best-case scenario." Maurice replaced Claude Noel, fired on the weekend as thhe Jets floundered and lost five in a row. Whit Merrifield Jersey. Noel left the new coach a note that Maurice said he didnt get a chance to read immediately. But after reading it Monday, he had nothing but praise for his predecessor. "The point was there are very special people here, its a great town, he made that point, great organization and great players. When you get fired, youre dealing with a lot of tough emotions. For him to take time, that just shows how much he cares and the quality of man that he is. . . "He grew to love the team and the town and he was a good coach." He said he wants to thank Noel for the good work that he did with the team that might have gone unappreciated with his firing. "And Im speaking from experience." Maurice was fired by the Carolina Hurricanes (twice) and the Toronto Maples Leafs. After the win the players were a lot more upbeat than they have been for weeks, although they know it was just one game. "It was good to get back on track but this is a process so we need to bring that same level of energy every night," said forward Blake Wheeler, who enjoyed hearing cheers instead of jeers from fans. "Its been tough. We know when we deserve to get booed off the ice. We know when we deserve to get cheered on." The word "playoffs" even re-entered the Jets vocabulary, although at 20-23-5 theyre still tied on points for last place in the Central Division with the Nashville Predators. "Our goal at the start of the year was to make the playoffs and youre never out of it until youre out of it," said rookie forward Mark Scheifele, the teams No. 1 draft pick in 2011 who has seven goals and 24 points so far this season and sits fifth among rookie scorers in the NHL. "Theres still a lot of games left. All we have to do is make a good push and play as a team." ' ' '

GLENDALE, Ariz. Christian Vazquez Jersey . -- Phoenix got so many power-play chances, one was bound to be successful. And one was all it took. Shane Doan scored his 350th career goal on one of Phoenixs six third-period power plays and the Coyotes went on to beat the Calgary Flames 3-2 Saturday night. Chris Summers got his first NHL goal and Rob Klinkhammer also scored to put Phoenix up 2-0 after one period. Calgary got power-play goals from Curtis Glencross and Mikael Backlund to tie it at 2 after two. On the third power play of the final period, Rahim Vrbata rocketed a shot toward the net and Doan deflected it past Joni Ortio for the deciding goal with 11:11 to play. "I dont ever remember it happening for us, always against us," Doan said of the avalanche of penalties against Calgary. "On a power play, you have to stay patient." Doan had hit the post with a shot on a power play earlier in the game. "I was so frustrated," he said. "I thought I had it. And I had some other opportunities. In the first period, I turned the puck over a couple of times that gave them opportunities and a little bit of life. You never want to do that. So to get a way to contribute was nice." The win gave the Coyotes 75 points and pulled them into a tie with Dallas, the Western Conferences No. 8 team. The Stars have played two fewer games and hold the tiebreaker. "I cant remember the last time I saw six penalties like that," Calgarys Mike Cammalleri said. "We need to learn a little lesson there and they had more discipline. Its a tough one to take." The Coyotes Mike Smith, strong all night, had 29 saves, while Ortio stopped 23 shots. Phoenix had five power plays through 10 minutes of the first 13:13 of the third period. Sutton scored on a slick deflection of Lauri Korpikoskis pass just 4:35 into the game. His first NHL goal came in his 34th career game. Sutton also was on the ice at crunch time in the waning minutes of the game. "Ive been with the organization a long time," he said. "I was drafted in 2006. Its great to be put in those situations." Phoenix made it 2-0 with 9:43 left in the opening period thanks to a miscue by Ortio. Ortio, recalled from Abbotsford of the American Hockey League on Feb. 3, and playing in his seventh NHL game, ventured behind the net to try to clear the puck but lost control of it. It went right to Klinkhammer, who tapped it into the empty net for his 10th goal. Calgary cut the lead to 2-1 on a power-play goal by Glencross 7:46 into in the second period. With Derek Morris in the penalty box for holding, Glencross positioned himself directly in front of the net, and glanced Cammalleris sizzling shot past Smith. Another power-play goal tied it for Calgary moments later. Backlund scored from a crowd in front of the net and it was 2-2 with 4:23 left in the second period. The Flames nearly got another goal in the final seconds of the second when Cammalleri got the puck point-blank in front of the net, but Smith was able to knock the shot away with his right pad. It was one of several shots from up close that Smith blocked. Phoenix was playing its first game back after a four-games-in six-days trip to the East. "We got up 2-0," Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said. "They pushed hard in the second and got themselves back in the game, but the third period, we played hard and drew some penalties. Fortunately, our power play which has been our strength all year, gave us the winning goal." On Friday night, Calgary trailed at Dallas 3-1 with eight minutes to play in regulation before rallying to force overtime, then win in the shootout 4-3. PAUL, Minn. -- Jason Pominville had a goal and an assist, Nate Prosser scored for the first time in 68 games, and the Minnesota Wild beat the new-look Edmonton Oilers 4-1 on Thursday night. Justin Fontaine and Jason Zucker also scored to help the Wild win for the sixth time in eight games and bounce back after getting shutout on Tuesday. Jordan Eberle scored his 15th goal for the Oilers, who havent won on the road in their past six tries. Edmonton spent most of the second period in the Wilds zone, but didnt generate many shots. When the Wild got set up on the other end, Prossers slap shot hit Ben Scrivens left glove and fluttered in to give Minnesota a 2-1 lead. It was Prossers first goal since Feb. 7, 2012, in Columbus. Fontaine stuffed in a rebound 2 minutes later and Zucker scored 8 seconds into the third on a give-and-go with Dany Heatley. Scrivens had 29 saves in his Oilers debut after he was acquired Wednesday in a trade from Los Angeles. LONDON - Roger Federer made the most of Kei Nishikoris erratic play Tuesday to secure a 6-3, 6-2 victory and move closer to a semifinal spot at the ATP Finals while Andy Murray posted his first victory to stay in contention at the elite tournament. Yeezys Cheap For Sale .Federer, the most successful player at the year-end championship with six wins, would have progressed from Group B if Milos Raonic had defeated the home favourite, but the former Wimbledon champion completed a 6-3, 7-5 win over the Canadian newcomer in a dour match that produced very little excitement. Its a nice match on Thursday to look forward to, itll be a great atmosphere again, said Murray about his final round-robin match against Federer. Its always a pleasure to play against Roger. Hes one of the greatest players that has ever played so to get the opportunity to play him in an atmosphere like this is excellent.Nishikori made it easy on Federer as he struggled with consistency throughout. The 24-year-old U.S. Open finalist showed his vast array of shots with some superb backhand winners but made a total of 30 unforced errors and, once again, could not find his serve.Hes shown in the past when he gets the upper hand against any player from the baseline, hes very difficult to beat, said Federer after moving to 2-0 in his group. Today for some reason he couldnt get it done. Maybe I was playing too well (...). But I know that Kei can play better. So for me it was really important to take advantage of the fact that I was feeling really good, and then maybe he was struggling a little bit today.Nishikori, one of three debutants at the O2 Arena this year, had been able to make up for his poor service percentage in his opening win over Murray with his powerful groundstrokes. Against Federer, it was a different story. The Swiss served well and played aggressively on Nishikoris second balls to cut short rallies. After a tight third game where the Japanese could not convert two break points, the Swiss produced a superb crosscourt forehand passing shot to earn a first opportunity to open up a 3-1 lead, and seized it with another forehand winner.Federer, who retains an outside chance of overtaking Novak Djokovic for the year-end top ranking following a season in which he claimed five titles, then held comfortably to wrap up the set.Nishikori called for a medical timeout at the start of the second set for treatment on his right wrist, but things did not improve afterward. He dropped his serve after hitting three unforced errors to hand a 2-1 lead to Federer and fought hard to save two break points in the seventh game, but hit his fifth double-fault of the match on the third one.I didnt play really bad. But still, I wasnt really consistent on everything: my serve, my strokes, Nishikori said. I made unforced errors. So thats why I couldnt stay there. In the evening session, Raonic struggled with his favourite weapon early on, only averaging 37 per cent of first services in the first set.The Scot broke in the sixth game after the Wimbledon semifinalist shanked an easy smash before hitting two more unforced errors. But Murray could not build on the momentum after opening a 2-1 lead in the second set when Raonic dropped his serve after double-faulting to gift him a break point.Raonic, from Thornhill, Ont., broke back immediately and both players held until 5-5 when Raonic let his nerves get the best of him, sending a forehand wide and netting a half-volley to give Murray the upper hand. The fifth-seeded Murray made no mistake on his next service game, closing out the match on his second occasion when Raonic went long. Hunter Pence, who reached a tentative agreement on a $90 million, five-year contract before the game, hit a two-run homer for the Giants. San Francisco had won three in a row. "He was throwing everything," Medica said. "He kept making good pitches and I was fortunate to keep getting a piece of them until I finally got one fair." Chase Headley doubled ahead of Medica. Guzman hit his homer and consecutive singles from Alexi Amarista, Chris Robinson, making his first major league start, and Stults produced another run and ended Petits day. Stults, who retired his last nine hitters, threw a career-high 203 2-3 innings this season. "Its definitely a milestone," Stults said. "The goal was to make it through the season healthy and try to be reliable." The Padres added four runs in the ninth on Gyorkos 22nd home run, a two-run shot, and RBI singles from Denorfia and Reymond Fuentes. Winnipeg trailed by five points in the final minute when quarterback Drew Willy completed a 13-play, 75-yard drive with Feoli-Gudinos 18-yard touchdown catch on third down to lift the Bombers to a 34-33 victory over the Montreal Alouettes on Friday night. The Blue Bombers went 3-15 last season, but are 3-0 to start the 2014 campaign under rookie head coach Mike OShea and Willy, who is in his first season as a starter. "Third down, in my hometown, it was amazing," said Feoli-Gudina. "It was a good team effort. I just had to make a play at the end." He grew up playing football for the Sun Youth Organization at Jeanne-Mance Park, a five-minute walk from the Alouettes home stadium, where he watched a lot of CFL games. So the former Toronto Argonaut, who joined the Bombers this season, was delighted to get a dramatic, game-winning grab with 29 seconds left before about 30 family and friends in the seats at Percival Molson Stadium. "Its pretty sweet," Feoli-Gudino said. "I had a diagonal. It was man coverage. I went inside and Drew put it right on the money." Backup quarterback Robert Marve had a touchdown and the Winnipeg defence got one from linebacker Desia Dunn and another from defensive back Chris Randle. Lirim Hajrullahu booted three field goals for the Bombers, who played their first road game after a pair of wins at home. Troy Smith threw his first three touchdown passes of the season to Chad (Ochocinco) Johnson, Kenny Stafford and S.J. Green for Montreal. It was the first career CFL touchdown for former NFL star Johnson. The Alouettes (1-2) also had four field goals from Sean Whyte. It was a long, grinding game slowed by 33 penalties to both teams for 328 yards and a pair of time-consuming challenges each from OShea and Montreal coach Tom Higgins. The last-minute TD marked the sixth lead change in the game. But while Montreal led 385-274 in total offence and in time of possession at 33:22, it went down to the wire when Montreal had to settle for a field goal after Demond Washingtons second fumble of a punt in the game. That left the Bombers needing a touchdown to win with 2:18 left to play. The final drive was aided by a pass interference call and a pair of third-down conversions, but Willy pulled it out in the end. "That last drive was pretty exciting," said Willy, who spent the last two seasons as Darian Durants backup in Saskatchewan. "Ive been in some crazy games before but to make a touchdown on third and 10 in a tough place to play like this, it was fun to be part of." It was a heartbreaker for Montreal, which saw Smith have his best game since taking over as the starter this season. He completed 18 of 32 passes for 309 yards, and for the first ttime looked to have found his range on longer throws downfield. Cheap Jerseys Free Shipping. But he also had a pass picked off by Randle when Montreal held an eight-point lead early in the fourth quarter. "Turnovers are costly, particularly when you turn them into touchdowns," said Higgins. "We got that turnover on a punt and it would have been nice if we got a touchdown there. "Then were breathing differently. But thats the reality of it. We are exactly where were at: slowly but surely getting better, but obviously not good enough to beat Winnipeg tonight." The Bombers got a 16-yard Hajrullahu boot on their first drive, but Montreal answered with a six-play drive capped by a 46-yard TD pass to Johnson. Ochocinco is known for hugging people he meets, and thats what he did to the nearest official after the score. Winnipeg looked to be stopped twice on their next drive, but a roughing call and a review of Jeff Tisdales hold on Clarence Denmark produced a pass interference call in the end zone that set up Marves one-yard TD 8:56 into the game. Whyte tied it with a 25-yard kick to open the second quarter . Winnipeg gave up the ball on downs on their own 32, but Jason Vega then stripped the ball from Troy Smith and Dunn ran it 70 yards to score at 10:41. However, the convert attempt was blocked by Alan-Michael Cash. Whyte and Hajrullahu traded field goals late for a 19-13 Winnipeg halftime lead. Montreal opened the second half with Smiths 49-yard TD pass to a wide open Stafford to take a one-point lead. Willy answered with a 49-yard toss to Nic Moore to set up Hajrullahus third field goal of the game, only to see Washington fumble a punt to set up a Whyte 37-yarder to put Montreal back in front. Early in the fourth quarter, Smith found Green in the end zone for a five-yard TD, but the Winnipeg defence struck back when Randle picked off a pass and ran it in from 28 yards. The two-point conversion attempt that would have tied the game failed. Whyte added a 23-yard boot for a five-point lead with 2:18 left in the game. Then came the winning drive that has Winnipeg off to its best start since 2003. "It looks like were all starting to believe in it," said OShea. "We played a tough defence tonight. We pulled out a win in the dying moments, which is a great CFL game in terms of back and forth. Its good for the fans and the league." Among the crowd of 20,384 was Marc Trestman, who won two Grey Cups with Montreal before he was hired last season as head coach of the Chicago Bears. Trestman got a warm ovation as he was honoured in a half-time ceremony. Chip Cox had six tackles and passed Kelly Wiltshires to take over 10th place all-time in career tackles with 613. The career leader is Willie Pless with 1,207. The Bombers are back home Thursday to face Edmonton, while Montreal travels to B.C. on July 19 for their second meeting with the Lions in three weeks. After a 99-97 loss to the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday night, his Celtics coaches and teammates have only positive things to say about the Toronto-born rookie. KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Theres been so much talk about Mike Moustakas at the plate that the third baseman ignored the conversation Wednesday -- even after doing something positive. Moustakas hit a three-run double in the second inning to account for Kansas Citys only runs, and Jason Vargas and the Royals bullpen made the meagreoffence work in a 3-2 win over the Colorado Rockies that completed a two-game sweep. Afterward, reporters peppered Moustakas with a series of questions about his decisive double, and each time he responded that Vargas pitched a great game. Moustakas steadfastly refused to address his own hit. "Its a big game for us against a great team. Feels good to go out there and get a W with the way that Vargas pitched," said Moustakas, who entered the game hitting .147 on the year. Moustakas did answer questions about his slumping performance during a lengthy session with reporters the previous day. But he was downright defiant when he was approached on Wednesday. He did talk about a nice play he made on defence, when he teamed with catcher Salvador Perez to pick off Charlie Culberson at third. The out came with the outcome still in the balance. "Moose coming up clutch was huge," said Vargas, who was perfectly willing to talk about the games biggest hit. "A big chance to put them in a hole early and we did." Meanwhile, Vargas (4-1) did not allow a hit until the fourth inning and did not allow a run until Drew Stubbs belted a two-run homer to left in the seventh. Louis Coleman got the Royals out of the inning without any more damage, and Kelvin Herrera worked a perfect eighth. Greg Holland then pitched a shaky ninth for his 10th save. After giving up a one-out single to Carlos Gonzalez and walking Nolan Arenado, Holland got Justin Morneau to hit a grounder to second. The ball was fielded cleanly and Kansas City got the runner there, but Morneau barely beat the throw to first base to keep the game going. Holland promptly struck out Stubbs to leave the tying run on third. "I think weve hit a little bump in the road here offensively," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. Cheap Clearance Shoes. . One of those strikeouts proved to be especially important: Troy Tulowitzki was left looking at a called third strike in the fourth inning. The leading hitter in the major leagues argued with plate umpire Dan Bellino over the location, which appeared down and in, and continued their one-sided conversation when he reached the dugout. Bellino responded by ejecting him. "I felt like it was over once Tulo went back to the dugout," Weiss said. "He heard him say something and thats when he threw him out." D.J. FLORENCE, Italy -- Fiorentina striker Giuseppe Rossi could be back playing in as little as six weeks, much sooner than first thought after he damaged his right knee again. Yeezy Boost China Wholesale . Rossi was thought to have ruptured the cruciate ligament in his right knee for a third time but tests Monday revealed that the American-born forward has a medial collateral ligament injury. "It seems to be a sprain with damage to the collateral. We got lucky. He could return to the pitch in 6/7 weeks," one of his agents, Federico Pastorello, wrote in Italian on Twitter. Fiorentina said Rossi will soon be seen by Colorado-based Dr. Richard Steadman -- the same surgeon who carried out the second operation -- "in order to correctly evaluate the extent of the injury and the prognosis." Rossi limped off in tears in Sundays 1-0 win over Livorno following a strong tackle from Leandro Rinaudo. The club initially feared Rossi would be out for another six months, although that was later reduced to three with the news that it wasnt another cruciate ligament injury. "We are more optimistic," Rossis other agent, Andrea Pastorello, said as the pair left the hospital to applause from fans. Rossi tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in 2011, and did so again in training six months later before he had returned to first-team football. The 26-year-old Rossi is the top scorer in Serie A this season with 14 goals in 17 matches and had returned to the Italy team. He is expected to be a key part of Cesare Prandellis World Cup plans. "Because of whats happened, Giuseppe has a great strength of character," Prandelli said. "He knows how much we value him. Ill say now: stay strong Giuseppe, were waiting for you." David Perron had a career high four-point night with two goals and two assists as the Oilers experienced an offensive explosion, blasting the Columbus Blue Jackets 7-0 to record a rare home win for their second victory in a row. VANCOUVER -- The struggling Vancouver Canucks cant seem to catch a break on the injury front. The team announced Thursday that centre Mike Santorelli has undergone surgery to repair a torn labrum and will be out five to six months, effectively ending his season. The news came after assistant coach Mike Sullivan told reporters defenceman Kevin Bieksa wont accompany the Canucks on their five-game road trip that leads into the Olympic break. "Its more than (a maintenance day)," said Sullivan of Bieksas absence from practice. "He is not going to join us on the trip. "We dont know the details of it yet. When we get more information well update you." On top of that, fellow defenceman Christopher Tanev is out with whats believed to be a broken hand. Captain Henrik Sedin has missed the last five games with an upper-body injury, although Sullivan expects him back soon. "Hes still day-to-day, but I believe he will join us on this trip and we are hopeful that well get him at some point here," said Sullivan. It all adds up to a very busy sick bay for a team that has just four wins in its last 15 games (4-8-3), including just two victories in regulation. The loss of Santorelli hurts up front as the Canucks have been held to two goals or less in nine of their last 10 games. The 28-year-old, who was injured Jan. 16, had 10 goals and 18 assists in 49 games this season. A native of nearby Burnaby, B.C., Santorelli impressed head coach John Tortorella in training camp and became one his most trusted players the first half of the season. "After consultation with our team physicians, we determined Mike would require a procedure on his shoulder," Canucks general manager Mike Gillis said in staatement. Yeezy Boost Online Sale. "The surgery was successful and we expect a full recovery." Santorelli -- who can become an unrestricted free agent in July -- had been a journeyman in the league until appearing to find a home with the Canucks. He was put on waivers by the Florida Panthers last season and picked up by the Winnipeg Jets before signing with Vancouver. The loss of Bieksa, who has four goals and 15 assists in 55 games this season, is also a significant blow. To take the 32-year-olds place on the blue-line, the Canucks recalled defenceman Frank Corrado of the American Hockey Leagues Utica Comets. The 20-year-old played six games for Vancouver earlier this season but has yet to register a point. Meanwhile, Tortorella still has one game to go in his six-game suspension for trying to get into the Calgary Flames locker-room after that infamous first-period line brawl Jan. 18. The fiery head coach, who had been on his best behaviour since coming to Vancouver prior to that incident, will sit out Friday games against the Winnipeg Jets before returning Monday against the Detroit Red Wings. What he will find is a team with a 27-19-9 record thats in a dogfight for one of the two Western Conference wild-card spots, a position the Canucks arent accustomed to after winning division titles five of the last six years. "We have to be a resilient group. We understand the circumstance, everybodys looking for the result," said Sullivan. "Resilience and attitude is a big part of having success in this league, because inevitably, most teams go through adversity where they lose a few games or things dont go their way, they hit the injury bug, whatever it may be -- sometimes its all of the above." LAS VEGAS -- He carried a two-fight losing streak into his bout with Gray Maynard, but Nate Diaz had a scintillating performance in a first-round TKO win. Shoes From China Online . The bout served as the featured matchup of Saturdays The Ultimate Fighter 18 Finale event, which took place at Las Vegas Mandalay Bay Events Center. It was Maynard (11-3-1) who took the advantage in the early going, scoring a takedown and looking to attack from top position. But Diaz (17-9-0) refused to stay on the floor and continually worked back to his feet, even after Maynard answered with a slam to the canvas. Once there, Diazs boxing did the rest. A stiff land hand started the assault, and as Maynard staggered against the cage Diaz unleashed a non-stop barrage of strikes. Dazed and bleeding, Maynard simply couldnt recover from the non-stop pressure. Referee Yves Lavigne gave him every chance to recover, but Diaz continued the onslaught until he earned the TKO finish, and Maynard stumbled to the canvas as the fight was waved off at the 2:38 mark of the first round. "I could tell he was out, but he wouldnt drop," Diaz said. "Ive got to keep throwing to drop these fools. Maybe the ref shouldve stopped it earlier, I dont know." In the nights co-feature, Team Tate fighter Julianna Pena overwhelmed former world boxing champion Jessica Rakoczy of Hamilton en route to claiming the womens bantamweight tournament title. Pena rushed forward at the opening bell, walking through Rakoczys punches to get into a clinch and bring the fight to the floor. Once there, a relentless attack saw her move quickly to mount and unleash a dizzying barrage of punches and elbows from the top. Rakoczy tried desperately to escape the position but Pena was simply too much. Referee Mario Yamasaki watched the action closely, offering warnings along the way, and eventually waved off the fight with one second left in the first round. With the victory, Pena became the first female winner in "The Ultimate Fighter" series history and earned a six-figure UFC contract. "I figured she would go to her strengths and use angles and try to box me, but I didnt give her any space. I was relentless," Pena said after the win. "I never thought there would be women in the UFC, so to be the first female The Ultimate Fighter winner is amazing." In the mens tournament final, Chris Holdsworth (5-0) impressed in a second-round submission win over Davey Grant (8-2), also scoring a six-figure UFC contract in the process. Grant looked to be the stronger fighter to open, rattling off powerful punches that just missed their target. But a wiry Holdsworth pushed forward with counters and constantly looked to take the fight to the floor. Hed get his chance in the second round. After avoiding a few more powerful punches, Holdsworth changed levels and brought the fight to the floor before moving swiftly to the back in a crafty transition. Once there, he made use of the opportunity, immediately working for a rear-naked choke. While the first effort failed, a second attempt saw the arm slip under the neck, and the tap came at the 2:10 mark of the second frame. "If you chase your dreams, they will come true," Holdsworth said after the fight. "Daveys a family man and a role model, but tonight was my night." In the evenings opening matchup contestants Jessamyn Duke (3-0) and Raquel Pennington (4-3) each picked up clear-cut decision wins. Duke out-struck fellow Team Rousey fighter Peggy Morgan (2-1) over the course of their three-round affair, utilizing a crisp left hand to batter her opponents face for the entirety of the matchup. Despite boasting a reach advantage, Morgan struggled to find the target and was out-struck 123-34 according to a FightMetric report, and Duke earned the fight with scores of 30-27 on all three judges cards. "Getting this fight is a huge weight off my shoulders, and Im honoured to fight in the UFC," Duke said after the win. "I can finally share everything about this life-changing experience of being on The Ultimate Fighter." Meanwhile, Pennington didnt necessarily look to be clicking on all cylinders during her three-round clash with Roxanne Modaferri (15-11), but still did enough to pick up a convincing victory. Modafferi moved well throughout the contest, looking to create angles and avoid her opponents power. And while she attempted 218 strikes to her opponents 86, she landed only 22 per cent of her blows as opposed to Penningtons 60 per cent. In short, when Pennington pulled the trigger, she was successful. Although shell need to be more active in future appearances, Penningtons effort was enough to score a win, 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28. "Im happy with the win, but knowing my capabilities I didnt fight my best fight," Pennington said after the win. "I wasnt happy because I have very fast hands, and I didnt really display those. Maybe it was because of my nerves." Dwyane Wade took over in the fourth quarter.DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke can finally take a breather. Rodney Hood scored 21 points to help the sixth-ranked Blue Devils beat Virginia Tech 66-48 on Tuesday night, a game that followed a demanding stretch that included games against their fiercest rival and the nations top-ranked team in a span of about 48 hours. Duke (23-6, 12-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) completed a stretch of five games in 11 days by beating the last-place Hokies (9-18, 2-13). "We need to get away a little bit," coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "We need to review our stuff instead of always planning for someone elses stuff." The Blue Devils fought to the final second to hold off Maryland on Feb. 15, then travelled to Georgia Tech before losing the weather-delayed rivalry game at North Carolina. Two nights later, they held off then-No. 1 Syracuse at home, then returned once more to Cameron Indoor Stadium to beat Virginia Tech in what Krzyzewski called "a grueling stretch." "Its kind of like -- I dont know if you do this -- getting that last bit out," Krzyzewski said. "Even though youve got two full containers, youre going to get that last little bit. Today was kind of, lets get it out there." Duke doesnt play again until next Wednesdays trip to Wake Forest, followed by the regular-season finale against UNC at Cameron Indoor Stadium on March 8. The Blue Devils have won 32 straight home games, the longest streak in the nation. "Probably everybody in the back of their minds was looking forward to (the break)," sophomore Rasheed Sulaimon said, "but at the same time we knew we had to take care of business." Hood said the coaches didnt let the players ease into this one, jumping on them about a sluggish pregame shootaround. The Blue Devils responded by running out to a 24-4 lead midway through the first half, though they struggled to land a game-finishing blow. "We started to warm up and we came back in and they got us pretty good because we didnt look like we were ready to go out there and fight," Hood said. "I mean, weve got to be prepared for that. The ACC tournament, you can play three or four games in three or four days so theres no excuse for us. Cheap Clearance Shoes Online. . I think its taxing on us, but weve got to be ready and get rejuvenated for next week." The win, along with Clemsons loss at Wake Forest, helped secure some extra rest for the Blue Devils. They are assured a top-four seed in Greensboro and the double-round bye that comes with it. Sulaimon scored 15 points for the Blue Devils, who shot 39 per cent and went 10 for 33 from 3-point range -- well below their ACC-leading 40.7 per cent from behind the arc. Freshman Trevor Thompson matched his season-high with 15 points for Virginia Tech, which has won once since the start of the calendar year. The injury-depleted Hokies have failed to reach 60 points in 10 of those 14 games. Still, Virginia Tech shot 48 per cent after halftime to keep the Blue Devils from running away with it. Virginia Tech finished with 15 turnovers, six from freshman Devin Wilson, that led to 22 points for the Blue Devils. The Hokies also went 8 minutes without a basket in the second half as Duke crept further ahead. "They do what bothers us, that pressure defence bothers us," Hokies coach James Johnson said. "And they did a good job with that. And at that time (in the second half), were probably running out of gas a little bit." Duke ran out to a 15-2 lead on Sulaimons first 3-pointer, then pushed ahead by 20 points when Sulaimon knocked down another 3 at the 9:50 mark. Virginia Tech closed the gap to 32-20 by halftime thanks to a spark from C.J. Barksdale, who had nine points on 4-for-4 shooting, and got within 34-27 on Jarell Eddies driving score with 17:59 left.
